Earth Day from the Refill Counter

Why Every Day is April 22nd at A Sustainable Village

In the world of retail, Earth Day can feel like the "Super Bowl." Brands across the globe suddenly turn their logos green, launch limited-edition "eco-friendly" collections, and fill our feeds with promises of future sustainability. But at A Sustainable Village, Earth Day is different.  April 22nd isn't a one-day event or a marketing campaign—it’s another refill day.

Beyond the "Greenwashing"

Living in New York City, we are bombarded with convenience. It’s easy to feel like the only way to "celebrate" Earth Day is to buy something new that claims to be better. But at our shop, we believe the most radical thing you can do for the planet isn't buying something new; it’s keeping what you already have in circulation.  That's why we're giving away free hand soap refill every April 22 onward.

When you walk into our shop with an old dish soap bottle or a glass jar you scrubbed off all trace of label and glue, that is Earth Day in action. You are choosing  the "Slow Path" in a fast city. You are deciding that a bottle’s life doesn’t end just because it’s empty.  You are refusing new plastic bottle.

The Power of the "Village"

This Earth Day, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be a "refiller" in 2026. With the world feeling a bit more expensive and life moving faster than ever, the act of refilling has become a quiet, steady form of activism.

Every time you top off your @asvrefill laundry detergent or swap to a solid dish block, you are part of a closed-loop system that actually works. You aren't just "reducing waste"; you are supporting a network of women-led businesses, New York-based manufacturers, and a local economy that prioritizes people over plastic.

Our Earth Day "No Woes" Commitment

I often hear people say they feel guilty because they aren't "zero-waste enough." If there is one thing I want to share this Earth Day, it’s this: Sustainability without the woes.

Earth Day shouldn't be about a perfect, plastic-free life that feels impossible to maintain. It’s about the "Small Wins":

  • Choosing the local tulips instead of the imported roses.

  • Using a Swedish dishcloth instead of a roll of paper towels.

  • Refilling an old bottle instead of buying a new one.

These aren't just "eco-tips"—they are the echoes of a community that cares.

Visit Us This Earth Month

Whether you’re a longtime regular from our early days or someone who has just discovered our new home on University Place, we invite you to stop by. Let’s celebrate Earth Day by doing exactly what we do every other day: refilling, reusing, and building a village that lasts.

Thank you, refill heroes, for being part of this journey. Every drop, every jar, and every refill makes a difference.
