6 Tips: Campus Life Zero Waste Living
As I head off to campus next fall, I've begun to think about some ways to maintain a sustainable lifestyle away from home. While it may seem as though we lose all control over our circumstances in a dorm, I think we can find ways to maintain a conscious lifestyle.
1. Carry a Reusable Water Bottle and Bag
This is a simple step, but it can greatly reduce our plastic waste. Many campuses have plenty of water bottle refill stations which we can utilize, and carrying a reusable bag is easy.
2. Familiarize Yourself with Campus Recycling and Compost Rules
Every situation is different but most campuses have evolved beyond just a black trash bag. My college has composting abilities, and by knowing what I can throw away where, I can seriously cut down on my waste.
3. Use Second Hand Textbooks and Clothing
Thrifting is very popular right now, so maybe purchasing clothing can be a social activity and an activity that cuts down on waste. I'm not sure how possible this is one all campuses, but my campus has a program where I can get second hand textbooks and then pass them on at the end of the year. This is both cheaper (textbooks are expensive!) and more sustainable.
4. Be Mindful of What You Leave Behind
A lot of the waste generated by college students comes from move out day, when students throw away bedding and decor and entire bottles of laundry detergent. We can be more mindful of the items can be saved for next year, brought home, or donated. The sustainable goal would be to throw out as little as possible.
5. Find a Local Refill Shop
If you can, take advantage of a local refill ships in your area. Get into the habit of refilling your self-care products. It's a good excuse to leave campus and good way to reduce waste in your collage life. Refill Shops map.
These are small steps, but they can have a big impact if we all join them. And as always, keep the pressure up on your local politicians to pass more green-friendly laws. Almost every school has a club fair in the first couple of weeks, and you can find clubs that encourage sustainability there. Join protests, political organization and continue to spread the word about sustainable living. Find a community of people who are also interested in living this lifestyle and keep them close as you move through the day.
