How to Shop at a Refill Store: Your First NYC Refill Visit
Curious about shopping at a refill store but not sure what to bring or how it works? You don’t need matching glass jars, special equipment, or a perfectly plastic-free routine.
At A Sustainable Village, our NYC refill shop, you can bring a clean container, choose a household or personal-care product, and refill the amount you need. We weigh your container before filling so you pay for the product, not the packaging.
Start with one empty bottle and something you already use every day.
What Is a Refill Store?
A refill store lets you buy products without taking home a new disposable bottle each time. Instead, you bring a container back and fill it again.
That might mean refilling your hand soap, topping up your laundry detergent, or bringing home dish soap in a bottle you already own. The idea is simple: keep useful containers in circulation rather than replacing them every time they’re empty.
You don’t have to change your entire shopping routine. One regular refill is a perfectly good place to begin.
What Should I Bring?
Bring a clean container suitable for the product you want to buy. An empty hand soap dispenser, laundry detergent bottle, or reusable jar can be a starting point.
Choose something that closes securely and is easy to carry home. If you’re unsure whether a container will work, ask our team before filling it.
There’s no need to throw away a useful plastic bottle to buy a new glass one. Refilling is about making the most of what you already have.
Forgot your container? We also carry containers for purchase in-store, so you can still get started.
How Does Refilling Work?
Your first refill takes three simple steps.
- Weigh your empty container. Before adding any product, weigh the container and record its weight. This is called the “tare,” and it allows us to subtract the container’s weight at checkout.
- Choose your product and fill. Pick what you need and fill your container with the amount you want. You don’t have to fill it to the top. If you’re trying something new, you can start with a smaller amount.
- Weigh again at checkout. The empty container’s weight is subtracted from the filled weight, so you pay only for the product inside.
If it’s your first visit, let us know. We’re happy to walk you through it.
What Can I Refill at A Sustainable Village?
Our refill selection includes everyday household and personal-care essentials, such as:
- Hand soap
- Dish soap
- Laundry detergent
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Body lotion
- Skincare
- Sunscreen
- Toothpaste tablet
Selection can change, so check with us if you’re making a trip for a particular product.
Not sure where to start? Choose something you’re almost out of at home. Bringing back an empty hand soap or dish soap bottle makes your first refill an easy part of your regular errands.
How Much Does a Refill Cost?
Your total depends on the product you choose and the amount you take home. Check the price before filling, and ask us if you’d like help understanding it.
When comparing a refill with a packaged product, consider the formula and its recommended use as well as the amount. For laundry detergent, for example, the recommended dose matters when working out the cost per load.
Refilling also lets you choose an amount that fits your needs and storage space, rather than automatically buying another full-size bottle.
Do I Need to Buy Special Bottles?
No. A useful container you already own is a good place to start.
If you prefer a dedicated bottle for your sink or shower, you can choose one to keep using. But there’s no need to build a coordinated collection before your first visit.
The best refill routine is one that works for your home, your budget, and the way you shop.
Make Refilling Part of Your NYC Routine
In a small apartment, keeping things simple matters. Start with one or two products rather than trying to replace everything at once.
Keep your empty container near your shopping bag as a reminder for your next errand. Once you know how quickly you use a product, you can plan refills around your regular neighborhood trips.
Finish what you already have, refill when you need more, and build the habit at your own pace.
